Moran’s Retail

A dynamic digital in-store experience, built with a retailer who met a lot of suppliers before choosing one — and who has come back with order after order since.

At a glance

“We wanted to create a dynamic digital in-store experience. We met with many different suppliers and chose to appoint Digital Screen Displays as our provider. Their software was by far the most user friendly. The Digital Screen Displays team have proven to be professional from supply of screens, installation, software training and ongoing support. I am happy to recommend Digital Screen Displays as the relationship between our respective companies and the aftersales has been excellent — so much so that we have placed several further orders and are in the process of completing yet another purchase.”

John Moran — Moran’s Retail Limited

The brief

A retailer who did the homework first

Moran’s met many different suppliers before appointing anybody. That is unusual, and it changed what winning the work required.

Most digital signage decisions are made on a quotation and a showroom demo. This one was made after a genuine comparison, which meant the hardware differences cancelled out almost immediately — because at this level they usually do. Two suppliers will offer similar panels at similar prices and both will look impressive on the day.

What separated it was the software. Moran’s have said plainly that ours was by far the most user friendly of those they saw. That is a judgement made by somebody imagining themselves changing a promotion on a Tuesday morning with a shop to run, rather than by somebody watching a demonstration.

It is also the right thing to judge on. Signage does not fail because a panel breaks. It fails because updating it is awkward enough that nobody does.

What we did

Four stages, one supplier

Supply, installation, training and ongoing support — the client’s own list, in their own order.

Supply of screens

Commercial-grade displays specified for a retail floor that runs every trading hour rather than for an office wall.

Installation

Fitted into a working shop, around trading, with the floor staying open throughout.

Software training

The team trained to run the screens themselves — which was the whole basis on which the software was chosen.

Ongoing support

Aftersales the client describes as excellent, which is the part that produced the repeat orders.

The real measure

They kept buying

Every supplier can produce a happy first customer. Far fewer can produce one who has placed several further orders.

Repeat purchasing is the only testimonial that cannot be talked up. A second order means the first one worked. A third means it kept working after the novelty wore off and after the person who championed it stopped watching it closely.

Moran’s have placed several further orders since the original project and were completing another at the time of writing. The screens are still being added to, which is a more useful thing to know about a supplier than anything in a brochure.

The detail

What a dynamic in-store experience actually needs

The things that decide whether retail screens are still current a year later.

Software you will actually use

The deciding factor here. If a promotion takes minutes rather than a support call, the screens stay current. If not, they do not.

Commercial-grade hardware

Rated for retail trading hours. Screens that run every hour the doors are open, not consumer panels asked to do a job they were not built for.

Installed around trading

The shop stayed open. Retail cannot close for a fit-out, so the work fits around the business.

Training that lands

Staff run it, not us. The point of intuitive software is that the handover is real rather than ceremonial.

Ongoing support

Aftersales, not a warranty card. The relationship continues after commissioning, which is what made the follow-on orders straightforward.

Room to grow

Added to over time. The system took further screens as the requirement expanded, rather than needing to be replaced to do so.

The result

A recommendation nobody had to ask for

Moran’s put their assessment in writing, unprompted, and have gone on ordering since.

The screens went in, the team could work them, the content stayed current, and when more were needed the same supplier got the call. That is the entire case, and it is a better one than most.

Comparing suppliers before you commit?

Good. Ask every one of them to let you change a promotion yourself, in front of them, on their software. It is the most useful ten minutes you will spend, and it is the test that won us this one.
